Internet Censorship in China
The Internet is a free, open plane full of information, hilarity, fun and caring communities, and even hate. From everything to television shows to religion to politics to current events, everything you can imagine, you can find information about it and more than a few people willing to chat with you about it. Yes, one of the Internet’s greatest aspects is the pure freedom of it all.
Over time, we’ve grown accustomed to the Internet. We almost take it for granted. All the information in the world available at your fingertips and most people don’t think anything more of it than their morning cup of coffee. So ask yourself this question; what would you do if the Internet were suddenly policed and censored? How would you react if you knew someone was regulating anything and everything coming into and going out of the web pages you view? Would you feel safer? Would you find it unfair? Would you have no problem with it at all?
The citizens of the People’s Republic of China already know what it feels like.
It is a very large task to police the Internet. After all, the Internet is immense and contains so much information and so many web pages. Despite it being a large task, China has been doing its best to regulate what can be shown to the Chinese public and what their citizens can write about. Entire websites have been blocked; certain keywords have been blocked from use, and regulations have been put in place to control what is acceptable content and is not acceptable content to post, watch, or read on the Internet.
Some of the content blocked by the Chinese government includes, but is not limited to, sexual content, many overseas news sites, especially targeting ones that are not ‘official’ sources or regularly cover subject matter relating to democracy or uprisings against government, and sites that contain or promote criminal activity. Though a handful of sites have been on and off the ban list, a majority of these blocked sites seem adamant in their ruling as banned.
Social networking sites, such as Facebook, have also been targeted by block in China. Supposedly, the reason for blocks on these sites is because they contain open political discussions and groups. In addition, it’s also speculated that Chinese officials believed that these websites might be used for organization of an uprising, protests or riots.
Though there’s debate on whether that’s a valid reason to actually ban these sites in their entirety, social networking sites have, indeed, been used for those very purposes. The well-known uprising in Egypt back in January was organized through a social networking site. Those who were planning the initial protest used the site to promote viewers to join them on the day of the revolution.
The censorship in China has even been pushed to the point of a haunting effect on users. Whether in Internet cafés or accessing the Internet in a business, or even getting online in the privacy of your own home, the lingering feeling that someone’s watching you is what they seem to want. As stated before, policing the entire Internet is a large job. So, a great way to make sure that any content they aren’t catching isn’t being accessed is to make users believe that they’re always being watched so they won’t even bother trying to find it. Accessing the Internet in a place of business seems to be the best effect. Businesses want to make sure they are always abiding by laws and don’t want any illegal activities going on in their place of business. There’s always at least one person around in a business location, so feeling like you’re being watched or even actually being observed by an employee isn’t too hard to believe.
As for being alone, well, that’s more or less up to the user in question. Despite whether or not you agree with a law, you still abide by it to not get in trouble. If you have a truly law abiding citizen using the Internet, you’d have no worry. Someone who doesn’t care would do it anyway. So, in essence, self-censorship in a private setting may not be the most effective method. The ever looming feeling of being watched is effective either way, though.
Internet censorship is not restricted just to China either. Many other countries feel the sting of some form of Internet censorship. Perhaps not as bad as China does, but still, it exists. Do you feel any Internet censorship is fair? Do you believe some of it is alright or needed? How much is too much or is it never enough? Some people believe the Internet was too free to begin with, but having no freedom at all takes away everything great about it.
